Hi, is it safe to eat kimchi (purchased from an Asian supermarket in a jar or bag) while pregnant? Are there any potential risks or concerns I should be aware of?
Artificial Intelligence Health Assistant's Answer

Yes, it is generally safe to consume kimchi during pregnancy. Kimchi is a traditional Korean dish made from fermented vegetables, such as cabbage and radishes, which are rich in vitamins and minerals. However, there are a few considerations to keep in mind. Firstly, ensure that the kimchi you purchase is properly fermented and stored at the correct temperature to prevent any risk of foodborne illnesses. Additionally, some pregnant women may experience heartburn or digestive discomfort due to the spicy nature of kimchi. If you have any underlying health conditions or concerns about consuming kimchi during pregnancy, it's best to consult with your healthcare provider for personalized advice. As always, moderation is key, so enjoy kimchi as part of a balanced diet along with other nutritious foods.

Neither the midwife not the obs med could tell me whether kimchi and sauerkraut are safe in pregnancy. Their advise was that if it is something we have eaten before it could be ok but always go for the supermarket option as those products have to follow strict food safety practices. I wouldn't eat the one from the Asian supermarket but the brand Biona makes it as well; if you have cravings I'd for that one.
