My doctor has advised me to have an ultrasound at 6 weeks and another at 10 weeks. Is it common for doctors to recommend frequent ultrasounds during pregnancy?

It is not uncommon for doctors to recommend multiple ultrasounds during pregnancy, as they provide valuable information about the health and development of the fetus. The number of ultrasounds can vary depending on various factors such as the mother's medical history, any potential complications, or specific concerns that need monitoring. Generally, most women will have at least one ultrasound in their first trimester (around 6-12 weeks) to confirm the pregnancy, assess fetal viability, and determine gestational age. Additional ultrasounds may be recommended if there are any concerns or if further evaluation is needed. These can include anatomy scans around 18-20 weeks to check for any structural abnormalities and growth scans in later stages of pregnancy to monitor fetal growth and well-being. Ultimately, the decision to have multiple ultrasounds is based on individual circumstances and should be discussed with your healthcare provider.

Many doctors will do this, but really you don't "need" any ultrasounds if you aren't comfortable with them. I had two ultrasounds with each of my first two babies.  One at around 7 weeks to date the pregnancy and one around 20 weeks to see if everything was going alright developmentally. With my third, I allowed them to do one ultrasound at 12 weeks and that was it. My daughter is currently pregnant and she had a dating ultrasound at 8 weeks and was told that if she wanted to, she could have another one at 20 weeks to see the baby's gender.
