How many ultrasounds does a doctor typically perform during pregnancy? Is there a specific number that is considered normal or standard practice?
Artificial Intelligence Health Assistant's Answer

During pregnancy, the number of ultrasounds performed by a doctor can vary depending on various factors. In general, most pregnant women can expect to have at least two ultrasounds throughout their pregnancy. The first ultrasound, known as the dating or viability scan, is usually done around 8-12 weeks to confirm the due date and check for any potential issues. The second ultrasound, often called the anatomy scan, takes place between 18-20 weeks and provides a detailed examination of the baby's development and overall health.

However, it's important to note that additional ultrasounds may be recommended in certain situations. For instance, if there are concerns about the baby's growth or if there are any complications such as high blood pressure or gestational diabetes, more frequent ultrasounds may be necessary to monitor the baby's well-being.

It's also worth mentioning that some doctors may offer optional or elective ultrasounds for non-medical reasons, such as gender determination or bonding purposes. These additional scans are not typically covered by insurance and should be discussed with your healthcare provider.

Ultimately, the number of ultrasounds you will have during your pregnancy will depend on your individual circumstances and any specific medical needs. It's best to consult with your doctor to determine how many ultrasounds are appropriate for you and your baby.
