Is it painful to undergo a pelvic exam? What is the purpose of using a speculum during the procedure?
Artificial Intelligence Health Assistant's Answer

It is completely acceptable to decline a pelvic exam if you are uncomfortable or have concerns. While some women may experience mild discomfort during the exam, it should not be overly painful. The speculum is used to gently open the vaginal walls for better visibility and access to the cervix. If you have any specific worries or questions, it's best to discuss them with your healthcare provider beforehand. Remember, your comfort and consent are important in any medical procedure.

It might be ok to say no but I would let the Dr do what they feel is necessary to insure the healthiest pregnancy possible. For example. I had a bump on my cervix when I was about 7 months pregnant with my son and they had to clip it to do tests for cervical cancer. It was benign but if I would have said no they wouldn't have noticed and I don't know what could have happened. That might be TMI and I'm sorry but I think it's safer to let them do what they feel needs to be done. They did use a speculum and it's only uncomfortable but didn't hurt for me. Good luck to you and your beautiful baby  I hope this helps you

Speculum doesn't hurt. It's thinner than average male penis. If you got pregnant by having sex you'll tolerate speculum exam just fine. Our vaginas are meant to stretch to accommodate a baby's head! And yes you need a speculum exam to make sure everything looks healthy.
